The BDSM flag is intended to represent the belief that people whose sexuality or relationship preferences include BDSM practises (Bondage & Discipline, Dominance & Submission, Sadism and Masochism) deserve the same human rights as everyone else, and should not be discriminated against for pursuing BDSM with consenting adults.

The flag is inspired by the leather pride flag and BDSM triskelion emblem.
(A triskelion or triskele is a motif consisting of a triple spiral exhibiting rotational symmetry. The spiral design can be based on interlocking Archimedean spirals, or represent three bent human legs.)
